So the towel is done, and I must say I’m quite fond of it. I uploaded the pattern in pdf form for anyone interested, and listed it on the patterns page. As usual you can also use the box widget on the side. I proofread the pattern, but I didn’t enlist a second pair of eyes, so if there are any glaring mistakes or something is confusing, let me know. If you want to knit the handle the way I did, you’ll have to be comfortable with double knitting and decreasing in double knitting as I included a chart, but I didn’t detail the mechanics of the technique.
The main stitch itself is pretty easy. In fact, writing it out takes longer than actually doing it. Like the woven plaid stitch that was the inspiration, it’s really only 11 rows. 11 rows in color A, 11 rows in color B, then everything repeated again, but starting from the wrong side. Once you get the hang of it, I find that it’s easier to keep track of where you are by looking at the knitting rather than the pattern. Then again, that might just be me.
Garter Gingham Woven Stitch (adapted from Barbara Walker’s Woven Plaid 2nd Treasury)
kwp4(knit, wrapping 4 times): insert needle as if to knit, wrap the working yarn around the needle 4 times (loosely), then pull through.
- Carry unused color up the side, twisting yarns every other row.
- Wrapping the stitches loosely makes them easier to slip.
- You’ll probably need to spread out the threads in the woven sections to space them properly.
Setup Row 1: With B, k1, *k5, kwp4 (5x),* end k1

That turned out so well! Thank you for sharing it with us.
[...] Country Gingham Tea Towel by Phoenix of Phoenix Photo, Craft & Design [...]
Hi, I have a quick question about this pattern… I’ve been mostly following the written line instructions because the chart is too small for me to read. There seems to be a line missing in the written instructions. I found it after enlarging the charts…
As given, it says:
Knit 3 repeats (12 rows) in grid stitch
Knit 2 repeats (88 rows) Garter Gingham Stitch
I think the grid stitch section is actually 13 rows, based on the chart? So after the 3 repeats of grid stitch, Row 1, with Color B, is repeated once more, before starting the Gingham with the Setup row on the WS. Have I got it right? Thanks so much for the help. : )
I e-mailed limedragon with my reply, but for you blog readers, the above comment is correct. I’ll be making a change to the pattern shortly, and the update will be noted on the pattern page.
